Lauri Tammi from Finland, interfaced friends and colleagues from Finland to talk about Smart city and Smart countryside in Finland.
There are several global megatrends that affect societies everywhere. Those are for example climate change, demographic change, urbanisation and dígitalisation. Those megatrends are present both in China and in Helsinki-Uusimaa region in Finland. To answer these challenges, we need solutions both in cities and in countryside. Join the session to hear how the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region is developing a smart region with solutions both for cities and countryside. New solutions and practical case example will be presented.
The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, ambitious target of being climate neutral by 2035 and sustainable growth are the basis for research and innovation activities in Helsinki-Uusimaa. This is highlighted in the recently approved Carbon Neutral Helsinki-Uusimaa 2035 Roadmap and with the theme of the regional innovation strategy – resource wisdom. For Helsinki-Uusimaa resource wisdom means using economic, environmental, and social resources in a deliberate way to create sustainable growth.
The Helsinki-Uusimaa Region is a forward-looking problem solver. The region consists of 1,7 million people, 26 different municipalities, 11 universities, several world-class research institutes, over 100 000 companies and several other organisations active on research and innovation. In Helsinki-Uusimaa there is the capital region of Helsinki with over 1 million inhabitants, but also very small municipalities with around 2,000 inhabitants. This creates a unique opportunity to test and pilot smart and digital solutions for different sized cities and municipalities. Based on a recent comparison, the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region has one of the most innovative ecosystems in Europe (2019). Different players from the whole region – large businesses and start-ups, public sector, research and education centres create smart innovations and tests together with the people. These actors are all independent and their cooperation is voluntary and there is no clear leader to make final decisions. Project based development model and innovation ecosystems are the corner stones of the smart city and smart countryside work in the Helsinki-Uusimaa Region.
